Diffusing essential oils safely

Research has shown that certain essential oils can help to reduce airborne germs, improve mood, support respiratory health, and even reduce unpleasant odors, but it is important to be aware of the potential risks. Essential oils diffused for a long period of time can result in headaches, nausea, or dizziness. It is advisable to follow the below safety guidelines when diffusing essential oils so that you can avoid over-exposure and enjoy the benefits with minimal risks.

  • When diffusing essential oils, ideally you should do so for 30 minutes at a time, turning your diffuser on between one and three times a day.
  • If you choose to diffuse your essential oils overnight while sleeping, consider using a diffuser that has a timer or auto shut off setting and use only high-quality oils.
  • Essential oils are highly concentrated and should be diffused in well-ventilated spaces.
  • Never leave a diffuser unattended, especially when there are children or pets in the home.
  • Start with the recommended amount of (3-5 drops per 100ml water) and increase as needed.
  • If you have asthma or other respiratory conditions, check with your doctor before diffusing essential oils.
  • Be sure to clean your diffuser regularly to prevent any build-up of essential oil residue.
  • If you start to feel headache, nausea, or dizziness, stop diffusing immediately and open a window for fresh air.
  • Follow the instructions that came with your diffuser to ensure proper use.
Diffusers and Pet Safety

Essential oils are popular for their many benefits, but it's important to be aware that they can be harmful to animals. When used in a diffuser, essential oils can be easily inhaled by pets and may not react well if they are confined to an area with a diffuser running. A diffuser releases a fine mist of essential oil into the air, and if inhaled, this can cause irritation to the lungs and mucous membranes. In a June 2022 article,, the ASPCA points out that, “In their concentrated form (100%), essential oils can absolutely be a danger for pets” and if you use diffusors in your home use it “for a short time period in a secured area—one that your dog or cat cannot access” and if you have a pet bird the ASPCA suggests that “it’s best to avoid using an essential oil diffuser in your house if you have birds. Birds’ respiratory tracts are very sensitive, and they may develop more serious problems if you use a diffuser” If you use a diffuser in your home, it is important to keep your pets in mind and take precautions to ensure that your beloved pets stay healthy and happy.

Are there specific essential oils safe for pets?

There is a lot of conflicting information out there about which essential oils are safe to use around pets. Although some sources claim certain essential oils are safe to diffuse around pets, it is best to consult with a veterinarian if you have specific questions about essential oils and your pet. At Moons Breath we are on the side of caution and generally recommend avoiding essential oils around pets. If you do choose to diffuse oils while your pet is present, we suggest only doing so for a short period of time.
